Volkswagen will introduce a full hybrid drive system for the Golf and T-Roc models starting in the fourth quarter of 2026. The new hybrid system operates in three automatic driving profiles—Eco, Comfort, and Sport—adjusting power output and boost functions based on driver preference. In Eco mode, system output is limited to 70% to conserve energy, while Comfort mode allows full power and boosting. Sport mode prioritizes immediate power delivery by shifting to serial hybrid operation for quicker acceleration. The system is designed to balance efficiency, dynamics, and comfort, with the electric motor supporting or replacing the petrol engine during optimal phases to minimize emissions and fuel costs.

The hybrid module integrates an electric drive motor, generator, power electronics, differential, one-speed gearbox, and an electronically controlled multiplate clutch with its own control unit. Additional components include an electric A/C compressor and brake servo, all housed within the vehicle’s front end. The high-voltage battery, with NMC cells and 1.6 kWh gross capacity, is installed in the vehicle floor at the rear, ensuring balanced weight distribution for both the Golf and T-Roc models.

Volkswagen will present detailed technical specifications of the new hybrid system at the International Vienna Motor Symposium from April 22 to 24, 2026. The company emphasizes that the full hybrid system offers a cost-effective electrification solution compared to plug-in hybrids, as it eliminates the need for external charging infrastructure while providing higher electric driving proportions than mild hybrids. The system complements Volkswagen’s existing range of electrified drives, including the all-electric ID. models, ensuring a solution for diverse customer usage scenarios.
