The World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledged the United States as a founding member whose contributions, including the eradication of smallpox and progress against diseases like HIV and malaria, have been critical to global health. The organization expressed regret over the U.S. notification of withdrawal, stating it would make both the country and the world less safe. The decision will be addressed by the WHO Executive Board in February and the World Health Assembly in May 2026.

The organization also noted improvements made in response to pandemic reviews and its ongoing 24/7 systems to bolster global health security.
The WHO dismissed accusations of pursuing a politicized agenda, reaffirming its impartiality as a UN agency governed by 194 member states. It underscored its commitment to serving all countries without favor, pointing to recent achievements like the adoption of the WHO Pandemic Agreement. The WHO expressed hope for the U.S.’s future return to active participation while continuing its mission to advance health as a fundamental right worldwide.
