·
When I spoke with the Creative Director and Lead Designer of Star Wars Zero Company earlier this summer, I left extremely excited about the promise of a turn-based tactics game set amid the Clone Wars, made by seasoned hands behind some of the genre’s best.
·
Now that I’ve played 15 hours of a preview build over the course of a week, I’m thrilled to report that it absolutely lives up to that immense promise.
·
Star Wars Zero Company is the perfect fusion of genre, developer, and intellectual property into something special that bodes well for the future of both tactics and Star Wars games.

You play Hawks, a former Republic officer who now leads the eponymous Zero Company of mercenaries, beginning as many great Star Wars stories do: suffocating in debt to the Hutt crime syndicate.

*Star Wars Zero Company* introduces a turn-based tactics experience set amid the Clone Wars, developed by Bit Reactor and featuring a squad led by former Republic officer Hawks. The narrative follows a mercenary company investigating a cult, the Coil, while navigating debt to the Hutt crime syndicate. Gameplay emphasizes tactical combat in varied environments, with permadeath mechanics and a focus on squad customization and found-family dynamics. The game is scheduled for release on Xbox Series X|S on August 27, 2026.

Players can fully customize their squad, including appearance, roles, and abilities, with options to respec characters at any time. Procedurally generated teammates and unique recruits like a Jedi Padawan and Mandalorian Bounty Hunter add depth to team composition. The Den, a base of operations on the Ring of Kafrene, serves as a hub for managing resources, selecting missions, and making narrative choices that impact squad bonds and outcomes. The game’s strategic layer includes a galaxy-spanning influence map and text-based operations that unlock rewards and advance side quests.

Combat uses a turn-based system where characters spend action points on movement, attacks, or abilities, with a shared Advantage resource enabling powerful team maneuvers. The game offers four difficulty settings, including a permadeath mode called Beskar, and features a variety of enemy types and environmental hazards. Early gameplay reveals emergent interactions, such as using grenades creatively to manipulate the battlefield, reflecting the developers’ emphasis on tactical depth and player experimentation.

The game’s narrative and mechanical design draw inspiration from series staples like found families and iconic species, while introducing fresh perspectives on the Star Wars universe. Bit Reactor’s debut title has been praised for its polished systems and engaging preview build, with anticipation building for its full release. Players can expect a blend of strategic management, narrative choices, and tactical combat when *Star Wars Zero Company* launches on Xbox Series X|S.
