State of Decay 3: Closed Beta Playtests Will Open the Game to Even More Players This Year

Undead Labs revealed plans for closed beta playtests of State of Decay 3 before the end of 2026, following an initial alpha phase that began in April 2026. The first wave of alpha testing was limited but provided valuable feedback on combat, visuals, and gameplay systems. Testers reported positive experiences with improvements to lighting, weather, character movement, and cosmetic options. The team plans to expand access to more players and platforms as development progresses.

Creative Director Kevin Patzelt emphasized the importance of broader playtesting to refine the game’s largest map yet and its untethered multiplayer features. He noted that additional opportunities would be available throughout the year for both new and returning players. Undead Labs’ development philosophy centers on community feedback, with playtest data directly influencing systems like co-op combat, permadeath mechanics, and narrative weight. The studio aims to ensure player losses carry meaningful consequences.

State of Decay 3 introduces a significantly larger shared open world compared to previous entries, set in a harsh wilderness. The game emphasizes managing multiple communities and survivors, alongside deeper building and systems management. State of Decay 3 is scheduled for release in 2027 and will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, and included with Game Pass. It will also support Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing cross-play between console and PC at no extra cost. The game will additionally launch on Steam and PlayStation 5.
