Upcoming Changes to XBOX Cloud Gaming
Xbox will introduce monthly hour limits for cloud gaming included with Game Pass starting in November, with additional playtime purchasable via the Xbox Store.
Xbox announced that beginning in November, cloud gaming hours included with Game Pass will be subject to monthly limits for the first time. Currently, eligible subscribers can stream without restrictions, but the change aims to manage growing usage costs. Players exceeding their allotted hours will have the option to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. The new limits will vary by market and are expected to affect approximately 4% of Game Pass subscribers who regularly rely on cloud gaming.
A separate cloud playtime purchase option will also launch in November, allowing players to buy streaming hours directly without a Game Pass subscription. This provides flexibility for those seeking occasional access or who prefer not to commit to a recurring membership. Players can stream eligible games they already own on supported devices, including Xbox One owners accessing Series X|S titles via cloud gaming.
The shift to limited cloud hours is driven by rising infrastructure costs associated with increased usage and longer play sessions. Xbox stated that this model will help sustain service reliability and performance while continuing to expand cloud support for more games throughout the year. The company acknowledged that the change may result in higher costs for some players, particularly those accustomed to unlimited streaming.
Xbox will share further details in November, including pricing for additional hours, eligible games, market availability, and tools to track remaining time. The company emphasized it will monitor player feedback and adjust the system as needed after implementation. Additional information about cloud gaming features and purchasing options will be provided before the changes take effect.
