Amazon EC2 R8id instances are now available in additional AWS Regions
AWS expands availability of EC2 R8id instances to eight new regions, enhancing memory-intensive workloads with up to 22.8TB local storage and 43% higher performance than R6id instances.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has expanded the availability of EC2 R8id instances to eight additional regions, including Asia Pacific (Mumbai, Malaysia, Sydney), Canada (Central), and Europe (Ireland, Stockholm). The instances are designed for memory-intensive workloads requiring high-performance local storage, such as in-memory databases and real-time analytics. AWS states these instances deliver up to 43% higher performance compared to R6id instances, with up to 22.8TB of NVMe SSD local storage—three times more than R6id. The expansion increases regional access for customers needing scalable compute resources.
AWS also introduced EC2 instance bandwidth weighting configuration, allowing customers to adjust network and Amazon EBS bandwidth by 25% to better optimize workloads. This feature provides flexibility in allocating bandwidth resources, enabling more efficient use of instance capabilities. The adjustment applies to all R8id instance sizes, supporting workloads with varying bandwidth demands. AWS emphasizes the feature’s role in enhancing performance tuning for memory-intensive applications.
The R8id instances now support Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) networking on select sizes, including 24xlarge, 48xlarge, metal-24xl, and metal-48xl configurations. EFA enables high-performance, low-latency networking for distributed workloads, such as large-scale data processing and real-time analytics. AWS highlights the instances’ suitability for workloads requiring both high memory capacity and fast local storage. Customers can deploy these instances through Savings Plans, On-Demand, or Spot instances, offering cost flexibility.
AWS customers can purchase R8id instances in the newly supported regions through existing pricing models, including Savings Plans, On-Demand, and Spot instances. The instances are positioned for workloads such as in-memory databases, big data analytics, and large in-memory caches.
