AWS CloudFormation now simplifies stack update rollback operations
AWS CloudFormation introduces force rollback to simplify stack update rollbacks, enabling single-operation completion and reducing manual intervention for affected resources.
AWS CloudFormation has introduced a force rollback feature to simplify the process of completing an update rollback and restoring a stack to a known good state. Previously, users had to manually identify and retry rollbacks for each affected resource, which was time-consuming and error-prone. The new force rollback option allows users to complete the rollback in a single operation, streamlining the process across all CloudFormation workflows, including AWS CLI, SDKs, AWS CDK, and AI agents.
With force rollback, CloudFormation automatically completes the update rollback and returns the stack to a deployable state without requiring users to handle each resource individually. Any resources that still require attention, such as those affected by changes outside CloudFormation, are recorded for review and resolution before the next deployment. This reduces the administrative burden and accelerates recovery from failed updates.
To use force rollback, users can run the continue update rollback command with the force rollback option. After completing the rollback, CloudFormation recommends creating a drift-aware change set to review any configuration differences before proceeding with the next deployment. This ensures that users can identify and address discrepancies caused by external changes.
Force rollback is available in all AWS Regions at no additional cost. Users can refer to the AWS Region table for specific service availability details. The feature is designed to improve operational efficiency and reduce downtime during stack updates.
