AMD announced plans to invest up to £2 billion in the United Kingdom over the next five years to accelerate AI innovation, research, and access to computing resources. The initiative aligns with the UK’s AI Opportunities Action Plan and AI Hardware Strategy, aiming to strengthen national AI infrastructure and talent development. Dr. Lisa Su, AMD Chair and CEO, highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting sovereign AI and long-term economic growth through partnerships with government, academia, and industry.

The UK government welcomed the investment, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall emphasizing its role in advancing AI research, skills development, and economic competitiveness. AMD also announced new collaborations, including a partnership with Imperial College London to advance computational science and healthcare innovation, and a project with Oriole Networks to support ARIA’s Scaling Inference Lab using photonic networking and AMD hardware.

AMD and Dell Technologies are working with the University of Cambridge to expand national AI supercomputing capacity, including the Zenith AI supercomputer and the Sunrise fusion AI system. Zenith, funded by DSIT and UKRI, supports AI-for-science applications such as climate modeling and materials science, while Sunrise, funded by DESNZ and owned by UKAEA, focuses on fusion research. Both systems are powered by AMD and Dell technology.

The investments and collaborations aim to strengthen the UK’s AI ecosystem by expanding compute infrastructure, supporting scientific breakthroughs, and fostering long-term competitiveness. AMD will continue working with government, academic, and industry partners to build the foundations for AI leadership and innovation in the UK.
