Research from Autodesk’s second annual AI Jobs Report reveals that while 82% of students feel confident using everyday AI tools like ChatGPT, only 36% feel prepared for AI tools relevant to their future careers. Nearly two-thirds of students admit they only understand the basics of job-critical technologies. Most are self-teaching these skills online, with 80% relying on digital resources rather than internships or hands-on experience to build expertise.

Demand for AI talent in design and manufacturing has surged, with job listings in architecture, engineering, construction, and related fields nearly two and a half times higher than two years ago. The fastest-growing roles emphasize creativity, with design skills now the most in-demand in AI hiring. Human-centric abilities like communication and leadership outpace coding in importance, reflecting a shift toward hybrid technical and interpersonal competencies in these industries.

Contrary to expectations, AI is increasing interest in hands-on, physical-world careers. Over 66% of students now express a preference for roles where they create tangible products or work with their hands, up six points from 2024. Among professionals, the preference for physical-world work over digital roles exceeds four to one. Autodesk’s investment responds to this trend, aiming to equip the next generation with the tools and training needed to meet evolving industry demands.
