Sent the Wrong Coin to a Crypto Invoice? Here Is How to Get It Back
CoinGate introduced an automated refund system for crypto payments sent to the wrong coin or network via its invoices, streamlining recovery without manual support intervention.
CoinGate invoices specify a single coin and network, and payments must match exactly to process an order. If a user sends a different coin or uses an unsupported network, the payment arrives but does not fulfill the invoice. The platform logs these mismatched payments on-chain and associates them with the invoice address, though they remain unlinked to the order. This ensures the merchant is not paid and the invoice remains pending, creating an opportunity for recovery.
Payments sent to the same address format across compatible networks like Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base can sometimes still be matched if the amount covers the order. Since September 2026, CoinGate’s invoice system automatically handles these cases by allowing users to submit a transaction hash and a refund address. The system verifies the payment details and processes refunds if checks pass, reducing the need for manual support intervention.
Refunds require a valid address that accepts the sent coin on the correct network, such as a Polygon address for USDC sent on Polygon. CoinGate screens all refund requests for compliance before processing, with automated refunds for straightforward cases and manual review for exceptions. The invoice page’s chat feature assists users by identifying the issue with their payment, such as wrong coin, amount, or network, and collects necessary details for support if needed.
Payments sent to an incorrect address or without a required memo/tag, or those sent after the invoice expired, cannot be recovered through the invoice system. Users must verify their transaction details and ensure the payment was sent to the exact address on the invoice. For payments that never reached CoinGate, recovery is impossible, as the platform cannot retrieve funds sent elsewhere. CoinGate advises merchants to include clear instructions on checkout pages to prevent mismatched payments.
