Russell charges to Dutch GP Sprint pole ahead of Norris

George Russell secured pole position for the Zandvoort Sprint, finishing ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in a closely fought session. Russell set a lap time of 1m 11.567s, narrowly beating Norris and Leclerc, while Oscar Piastri took fourth for McLaren. Kimi Antonelli completed the top five for Mercedes, though he lost time after an early gravel excursion. The session saw tight margins, with the top six drivers separated by less than two-tenths of a second.

The opening segment of Sprint Qualifying saw several drivers eliminated early, including Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso, who struggled with setup issues and technical problems. Alonso’s session was further hampered by a malfunctioning Straight Line Mode on his rear wing, while Sainz faced difficulties after floor damage in Free Practice. Lance Stroll also underperformed for Aston Martin, finishing behind Alonso. Meanwhile, Isack Hadjar’s substitute Liam Lawson impressed, narrowly missing progression to the final stage by just 0.009 seconds.

Sprint Qualifying progressed through three stages, with McLaren and Mercedes initially setting the early pace. Norris and Piastri led the timesheets at various points, while Antonelli’s session ended prematurely after he ran wide and damaged his car. Russell capitalized on the opportunity, moving into provisional pole before the final stage. The session highlighted the competitive nature of the top teams, with tight margins and rapid lap-time improvements as track conditions evolved.

In the final stage, Norris set a provisional pole time of 1m 11.608s, but Russell responded with a 1m 11.567s lap, securing pole by 0.041 seconds. The Dutch fans witnessed a tense one-lap shootout as the remaining drivers switched to soft tyres, with McLaren and Mercedes battling for the top spot. The session concluded with Russell on pole, Norris in second, and Leclerc third, while Antonelli finished fifth after his early setback.
