Garmin avionics navigation database coverage expands to Africa
Garmin expands its Navigation Database to cover over 40 African countries, offering updated aviation navigation data for departure, enroute, arrival, and approach phases of flight.

Garmin announced expanded coverage of its Navigation Database to include Africa, providing pilots with updated aviation navigation information for departure, enroute, arrival, and approach phases of flight. Previously available in the Americas, Europe, and South Pacific regions, the database now covers over 40 countries in Africa, including enroute and airspace data, instrument procedures, frequencies, and airport information. The update is accessible for Garmin integrated flight decks, navigators, flight displays, and portable devices. Garmin Pilot users in South Africa can also access additional VFR data, such as airport arrival and departure routes and visual reference points.
The Garmin Navigation Database for Africa is available through various subscription options, including a new Transatlantic OnePak subscription designed to simplify updates for aircraft equipped with multiple Garmin avionics systems. The OnePak subscription combines the Navigation Database with other compatible databases for all avionics in a single aircraft, including eligible portable devices. Transatlantic OnePak subscriptions start at $999 annually, with options including FliteCharts terminal procedure charts starting at $1,399. Standalone annual subscriptions for the Navigation Database for Africa begin at $449, while single-month updates start at $149. Updates can be purchased via flyGarmin.com.
Database updates for Garmin avionics or portables can be managed using the Garmin Aviation Database Manager, a computer application that simplifies the process. The application allows users to download the latest updates automatically, track current and future cycles, and install databases directly to devices or data cards. For GNS series navigators, a Garmin USB aviation data card programmer is required to transfer updates. Once loaded, pilots can insert the data card into the navigator and proceed with current navigation data. Additional tools like Database Concierge and PlaneSync further streamline updates by enabling wireless transfers via the Garmin Pilot app or automatic updates over 4G LTE or Wi-Fi through the GDL 60 datalink.
