G7 Foreign Ministers’ Statement on Bab al-Mandab and Navigational Rights and Freedoms
G7 foreign ministers and the EU condemn Houthi attacks in Yemen and the Red Sea, calling for an immediate ceasefire, an end to threats against shipping, and a return to political negotiations.
The G7 Foreign Ministers and the EU High Representative expressed grave concern over escalating Houthi strikes in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia, which they described as an unacceptable threat to regional stability, global energy security, and maritime safety in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait. They condemned attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, emphasizing that such actions deepen humanitarian suffering and destabilize the region. The statement underscored the need to protect navigational rights and freedoms, warning that disruptions could severely impact global supply chains, particularly for energy, food, and fertilizer. The ministers also highlighted the risks of further economic instability if the conflict continues unabated.
The G7 called on the Houthis to immediately halt all military actions, cease threats and attacks against civilian shipping, and engage in good faith in the political process. They also urged Iran to stop arming and supporting the Houthis, citing violations of UN Security Council resolutions 1747, 2140, and 2216. The statement emphasized that such actions by Iran contribute to a dangerous escalation pattern that threatens international trade and global economic stability.
The ministers reaffirmed their full solidarity with the legitimate Government of Yemen and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, condemning the Houthis' ongoing attacks as reprehensible and counterproductive to peace efforts. They stressed the importance of ensuring permanent maritime safety and security to prevent lasting disruptions to global supply chains, particularly for critical resources like energy and food. The statement also noted the potential for widespread economic harm to vulnerable populations in the region and beyond if the conflict persists.
Looking ahead, the G7 reaffirmed their support for the unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Yemen. They reiterated their backing for UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg’s efforts to achieve a negotiated, inclusive, and Yemeni-led political settlement. The ministers emphasized the need for all parties to prioritize dialogue and de-escalation to restore stability and protect global trade routes in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.
