Joint statement by Canada and Côte d’Ivoire: A growing partnership
Canada and Côte d’Ivoire signed a memorandum to formalize regular high-level consultations, following a 2026 meeting between their foreign ministers in Abidjan.
On August 6, 2026, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, met with Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nialé Kaba, to discuss bilateral cooperation. The ministers signed a memorandum establishing a bilateral consultation mechanism to facilitate regular dialogue on shared priorities, including economic, political, and social issues. This framework aims to strengthen a partnership already supported by record trade of Can$1.2 billion in 2025 and growing Canadian investment in Côte d’Ivoire.
The ministers highlighted Côte d’Ivoire’s economic potential and Canada’s role in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises. FinDev Canada committed Can$65 million to NSIA Banque to expand financial services, particularly for women-led businesses. Both countries agreed to deepen collaboration in mining, agriculture, infrastructure, energy, digital technology, and the green economy, with a focus on responsible investment and technology transfer to align with Côte d’Ivoire’s National Development Plan 2026–2030.
Canada and Côte d’Ivoire reaffirmed their commitment to international law, La Francophonie, and multilateral institutions such as the United Nations. They emphasized the importance of peace, security, and stability for sustainable development, citing joint contributions to regional stability through initiatives like the International Academy for Counter-Terrorism and peacekeeping missions. The ministers also pledged to enhance cooperation in counterterrorism, cybersecurity, maritime security, and institutional capacity building.
Following the meeting, Minister Anand expressed gratitude to the Ivorian government for its hospitality. Both ministers committed to maintaining regular dialogue to implement joint actions and elevate the partnership to a strategic level, reflecting their shared determination to advance mutually beneficial cooperation.
