Google has launched the AI for Healthcare Professionals Certificate, a self-paced program developed by clinicians to help medical staff manage administrative tasks. The five-hour course focuses on responsible AI use, offering up to 5.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Registration is open via grow.google/healthcare, with flexible lessons designed for busy schedules. The curriculum emphasizes patient safety and privacy while teaching AI tools for tasks like email summarization and patient communication.

Dr. Michael Howell, Google’s Chief Health Officer, introduced the program after observing global demand from healthcare workers for practical AI training. The certificate addresses the urgent need to ease administrative workloads, which contribute to high burnout rates among nurses and doctors. Surveys indicate nearly one in three registered nurses plan to leave or retire due to unsustainable workloads, while nine out of 10 doctors seek dedicated AI training.

The program is already being adopted by leading institutions, including NYU Grossman School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Touro University. Nursing schools like Purdue University School of Nursing are also integrating the certificate into their training. The curriculum was reviewed by clinical and medical education professionals, aligning with draft AAMC AI competencies.

The certificate consists of four courses designed to integrate AI into daily healthcare routines. By automating routine tasks, the program aims to restore time for direct patient care, addressing the growing pressure on healthcare professionals. The initiative reflects a broader effort to support AI literacy in clinical settings.
