Google Arts & Culture has introduced a new online collection dedicated to tango, developed in partnership with local institutions including MALBA, Tango & Tango, and Argentina’s Ministry of Culture. The project highlights the dance’s origins in Buenos Aires, its evolution into a global cultural phenomenon, and its 2009 recognition by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Users can explore the collection via the Google Arts & Culture website or its free mobile app, which offers stories on legendary figures and contemporary practitioners alike.

The collection includes profiles of iconic musicians such as Carlos Gardel and Ástor Piazzolla, alongside artisans who craft tango shoes and instruments like the bandoneon. It also features personal narratives from dancers and orchestra players, illustrating the art form’s enduring community. Leonardo Cifelli, Argentina’s national secretary of culture, praised the initiative for combining technology and institutional collaboration to preserve cultural heritage ahead of the 15th anniversary of tango’s UNESCO recognition on September 30.

Tango’s history is traced from its roots in Buenos Aires’ working-class neighborhoods to its status as a global symbol of Argentine identity.
