Tap to pay with Google Pay is coming to Walmart.
Google Pay’s tap-to-pay feature will launch at select Walmart and Sam’s Club stores in the U.S. next week, expanding to all locations by 2026 and fuel stations by mid-2027.
Google announced that customers at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations in the U.S. will soon be able to use Google Pay’s tap-to-pay feature for in-store purchases starting next week. The service allows shoppers to complete transactions by tapping their phone or smartwatch at checkout, eliminating the need to handle physical cards or cash. Walmart and Sam’s Club will expand the feature to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026, with fuel stations included by mid-2027.
The integration follows an existing partnership between Google and Walmart, aiming to streamline the checkout process for customers who prefer digital payment methods. Users will need to add their preferred payment card to Google Wallet to enable the tap-to-pay function. Google states the feature is designed to reduce transaction time while maintaining security standards comparable to traditional card payments.
Walmart, the largest U.S. retailer by revenue, has not disclosed specific details about the initial stores where tap-to-pay will launch next week. The rollout aligns with broader industry trends favoring contactless payments, which have grown in popularity since the COVID-19 pandemic. Competitors like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay already offer similar services at Walmart locations.
Industry analysts note that the expansion of tap-to-pay at Walmart could further accelerate the adoption of digital wallets among U.S. consumers. The feature is expected to benefit shoppers who prioritize speed and convenience, particularly during high-traffic periods such as weekends or holidays. Google has not announced any fees associated with using Google Pay at Walmart.
