Xcel Energy to power new Google data center in Minnesota

Xcel Energy announced it will power a new Google data center in Pine Island, Minnesota, through an Electric Service Agreement that includes a significant expansion of clean energy projects. The agreement aims to support Minnesota’s clean energy goals while ensuring existing customers do not face higher costs due to the new demand. Google’s data center will support core services such as Workspace, Search, YouTube, and Maps, which underpin daily digital activities for individuals, businesses, and governments.
Under the agreement, Google will cover all costs associated with its new service, aligning with Minnesota’s regulatory requirements for large loads. Xcel Energy emphasized that its average Minnesota residential customer’s electric bills have been 27% below the national average over the past five years, with residential rates increasing by just 1.55% annually since 2013. The company stated that new large loads like this data center will not increase costs for existing customers while maintaining reliable service.
The partnership includes the development of 1,900 megawatts of new clean energy, including 1,400 MW of wind, 200 MW of solar, and 300 MW of long-duration energy storage. Google will also fund a $50 million investment in Xcel Energy’s Capacity*Connect Program to enhance grid reliability. The additional generation will help advance Xcel Energy’s goal of exceeding its current 70% carbon-free electricity mix, contributing to Minnesota’s broader clean energy objectives.
The agreement will be reviewed by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission in the coming weeks, with formal approval required before power supply begins. The project includes the installation of a 300 MW (30 GWh) Form Energy iron-air battery system, the largest of its kind by gigawatt-hour capacity globally. This system will store energy during periods of high production and low demand, dispatching it during peak demand to strengthen grid reliability over multiple days. The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce praised the partnership as a model for balancing economic growth with environmental considerations.
