Hyundai Motor Group announced the full operation of its Data Flywheel, a system designed to create a self-reinforcing loop of data collection, AI model training, validation, and deployment to enhance autonomous driving technology. The initiative was unveiled during the Group’s Autonomous Driving Media Day at 42dot headquarters in Gyeonggi Province, where executives outlined the strategy and its role in securing a competitive edge in global autonomous driving development. The Data Flywheel integrates real-world driving data from millions of vehicles to refine AI models, which are then deployed back into vehicles to gather further data, enabling rapid technological advancement. The system is positioned as a core component of the Group’s autonomous driving competitiveness and future vehicle technology foundation.

At the event, 42dot introduced Atria AI, the Group’s proprietary end-to-end autonomous driving system, and detailed progress on Vision-Language-Action (VLA) technology, which combines visual recognition, language-based reasoning, and action generation. A demonstration featured an Atria AI-equipped test vehicle operating autonomously at Level 2++ in urban traffic, illustrating the Data Flywheel’s role in continuous learning and performance improvement. The Group emphasized that autonomous driving competitiveness hinges on the speed and effectiveness of connecting data to AI learning and real-world deployment rather than merely accumulating large datasets.

Hyundai Motor Group also outlined a dual-track strategy combining rapid deployment of validated autonomous driving technologies with the development of proprietary AI systems. The Group is integrating NVIDIA’s vehicle AI computing platform into its software-defined vehicle architecture for near-term deployment while advancing Atria AI through an integrated development framework with 42dot. This approach aims to deliver immediate advancements while building a sustainable technology advantage for future autonomous driving capabilities.

To support the Data Flywheel, the Group operates approximately 40 dedicated data collection vehicles globally, capturing diverse real-world driving scenarios and edge cases. A pilot project with South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to deploy Atria AI-equipped SDV Pace Cars in Jeonnam-Gwangju by year-end, testing autonomous driving in complex Korean road environments. The collected data will be fed back into the Data Flywheel to accelerate AI model improvements and validate Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities in real-world conditions.
