Anderon, an IBM Company, Finalizes Agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce for a $1 Billion CHIPS Award to Accelerate R&D for U.S.-Based Pure-Play Quantu
Anderon, an IBM subsidiary, secured a $1 billion CHIPS Act award to expand its quantum wafer foundry in Albany, New York, aiming to scale manufacturing for superconducting qubit technologies.
Anderon LLC, an IBM company, finalized a $1 billion award from the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act to accelerate research and development for quantum wafer manufacturing. The agreement follows a May letter of intent and builds on an additional $1 billion investment from IBM. The funding will support Anderon’s operations at its 300-millimeter pure-play quantum wafer foundry in Albany, New York, which serves as a dedicated manufacturing hub for the quantum industry. The facility is designed to produce specialized wafers for superconducting qubit arrays and related components, addressing critical needs in quantum processor development.
Anderon’s Albany-based foundry is the world’s most advanced pure-play quantum wafer facility, purpose-built for quantum processors. The company has already begun producing quantum wafers, demonstrating its ability to transition advanced research into commercial-grade technologies. This early production milestone highlights Anderon’s role in bridging the gap between quantum research breakthroughs and scalable manufacturing capabilities. The facility leverages proven quantum intellectual property and a highly skilled workforce to support high-performance quantum components.
The $1 billion CHIPS award will enable Anderon to expand its manufacturing capacity, strengthen domestic supply chains, and accelerate innovation in quantum computing. The funding aligns with the U.S. government’s goal of fostering a robust quantum ecosystem by providing production-scale infrastructure. Anderon’s work is expected to support advancements across industries such as advanced materials, chemistry, optimization, and cybersecurity.
