Launching Bill Payments in India, Enabling People to Pay Everyday Household Bills Directly on WhatsApp

WhatsApp users in India can now pay electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card and loan bills directly within the app. The feature integrates with the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, providing access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories. Payments can be made securely without leaving the chat interface, simplifying a routine household task. Users can view past payments, upcoming bills, and manage multiple accounts under a single provider.

The rollout follows existing WhatsApp services in India, such as phone recharges, metro ticket bookings, and government chatbot access. The new bill payment feature aims to consolidate everyday financial tasks within a single platform. Users can initiate payments by tapping the ₹ icon on the home screen, selecting their biller, and choosing a preferred payment method. The integration is designed to reduce the need to switch between multiple apps for bill payments.

Meta emphasizes the convenience of paying bills as easily as sending a message, aligning with the app’s existing utility in daily life. The feature is part of an effort to bring digital payments to users in remote areas of India. WhatsApp’s managing director in India highlighted the goal of making bill payments as effortless as other in-app activities. The company did not specify a launch date but noted a gradual rollout to all Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.

The announcement builds on WhatsApp’s existing role as a multifunctional platform in India. By adding bill payments, the app further integrates essential services into a unified experience. The feature leverages the Bharat Connect infrastructure to ensure broad accessibility across billers and categories. Meta did not disclose transaction fees or revenue models associated with the new service.
