Meta announced a donation of 15,000 Ray-Ban Meta glasses to Vision Ireland, Ireland’s national sight loss charity, ensuring every blind and visually impaired adult supported by the charity receives a pair. The glasses integrate AI technology to assist with tasks such as reading text, identifying objects, and accessing information, aiming to enhance independence for users. Vision Ireland will manage the phased rollout, including eligibility assessments, training, and ongoing support, funded by Meta. The initiative follows a demo event at Meta’s Ireland headquarters, where blind and low-vision advocates tested the glasses and provided feedback on their practical use.

Meta stated the donation reflects its commitment to making AI technology accessible to all, aligning with its broader efforts to develop inclusive tools. The company highlighted the glasses’ potential to transform daily life for users by enabling hands-free interaction with their surroundings. Ireland, home to Meta’s international headquarters, serves as a key hub for the company’s global operations, including its Reality Labs facility in Cork, which contributes to AI and AR wearable development. Meta’s infrastructure in Ireland, including the Clonee Data Center in Meath, supports the delivery of these technologies.

Anne O’Leary, Meta Ireland’s Vice President and Head, emphasized the significance of the donation, noting the glasses’ proven impact on daily life for those with sight loss. She described the partnership with Vision Ireland as a landmark initiative that will extend the technology’s reach across Ireland. Dina Powell-McCormick, Meta’s President and Vice-Chair, underscored the global commitment to accessibility, citing positive experiences with blind veterans in the U.S. and reaffirming the company’s belief in an inclusive future.

Chris White, CEO of Vision Ireland, described the donation as transformative, highlighting its potential to provide greater independence, confidence, and choice for thousands of blind and visually impaired individuals. Vision Ireland will lead the national rollout, ensuring the technology delivers meaningful and lasting benefits. Eligible individuals can register interest via meta.vi.ie or a dedicated phone line, with training included to help users maximize the glasses’ capabilities for everyday tasks.
