Artemis III Orion Crew and Service Models Joined
NASA technicians integrated the Orion crew and service modules for Artemis III on July 30, 2026, at Kennedy Space Center. The crew module will transport four astronauts, while the service module provides propulsion and power for lunar landing system tests.
Technicians at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center completed the physical integration of the Orion crew module and service module on July 30, 2026, inside the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building. This milestone marks a critical step in preparing the spacecraft for the Artemis III mission, which aims to return astronauts to the lunar surface.
The crew module will house and support four astronauts during the mission, including NASA astronauts Randy Bresnik, Andre Douglas, and Frank Rubio, alongside ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano. The service module, provided by ESA, will supply propulsion, power, and life support systems throughout the journey.
During Artemis III, Orion will conduct rendezvous and docking tests with prototype lunar landers developed by Blue Origin and SpaceX. These test articles are designed to evaluate compatibility and operational procedures ahead of crewed lunar landings.
The integration process ensures all systems are aligned for the mission’s objectives, including lunar surface access and safe return to Earth. NASA and its international partners continue preparing Orion for the 2026 launch, pending final system checks and approvals.
