NASA’s Lunar Development and Test Facility at Johnson Space Center is preparing Artemis mission hardware by addressing the challenges posed by lunar dust. Unlike Earth sand, Moon dust is sharp and abrasive, capable of damaging equipment and spacesuits while posing health risks to astronauts. Engineers at the facility are developing and testing mitigation strategies to ensure the safety and functionality of systems during lunar surface operations.
The facility, managed by NASA engineers, includes specialized equipment such as vacuum chambers and lunar regolith simulants to replicate lunar conditions. Engineers evaluate spacesuits, spacecraft components, and mechanisms under these simulated environments to assess performance. The Propulsion and Power Division developed systems enabling realistic lunar simulations, including a 3-foot cube vacuum chamber and a 15-foot thermal vacuum chamber.
Inside the chambers, hardware is tested under conditions that mimic the Moon’s harsh environment using closed-loop nitrogen systems. Engineers are also advancing techniques to extract resources from lunar regolith, such as oxygen for astronauts and liquid oxygen for rocket propellant. These efforts support long-duration lunar exploration and future Artemis missions.
The facility’s exterior features a 2024 mural by artist Sebastian Boileau, depicting astronauts on the lunar surface. NASA has also launched a 3D virtual tour, allowing public access to the facility where engineers prepare the technologies for the Golden Age of lunar exploration and innovation.
