Ofqual launches local authority exam results data
Ofqual has updated its interactive map to provide detailed qualification outcomes by local authority in England, supporting devolved decision-making and local accountability.
Ofqual, the qualifications regulator for England, has launched an enhanced interactive map showing qualification results and subject uptake by local authority ahead of results days. The update responds to user demand for more geographically precise data, replacing broader ceremonial county boundaries with detailed local authority districts, counties, and regions. The platform now covers GCSEs, A Levels, T Levels, and other qualifications, offering breakdowns by grade and subject uptake. This change aligns with the government’s shift toward local decision-making, providing policymakers, students, and parents with clearer evidence to assess performance in their areas.
The new data will enable timely analysis of regional inequalities in qualification outcomes, supporting local leaders in addressing disparities. Results for 2026 will be published on the platform at 9:30am on results days, with a brief delay expected as Ofqual’s data is received directly from awarding organisations before the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) reports. The platform’s visualisations are based on Ofqual’s own data, which may differ slightly from JCQ figures due to earlier processing times. This ensures users have the most up-to-date information available during results week.
Ofqual Analytics replaces previous maps that provided limited regional detail, now offering granular insights into qualification performance across England. The tool allows users to explore trends over multiple years, from 2019 to 2025, for GCSEs and A Levels. By making this data publicly accessible, Ofqual aims to enhance transparency and support evidence-based policymaking at the local level. The platform is designed to handle high traffic during results week, when thousands of users typically access qualification data.
The Department for Education (DfE) will later publish additional statistics on key stage 4 performance and 16–18 results, including regional and local authority breakdowns. Ofqual’s interactive map complements these reports by providing immediate, detailed insights during results days.
