Professor David Strain appointed as DWP Chief Medical Advisor

Professor David Strain will assume the role of DWP Chief Medical Advisor at the end of August, transitioning from his positions at the University of Exeter, the NHS, and the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST). His prior roles include Chair of the British Medical Association Board of Science and Medical Advisor to Action for ME. The appointment follows his two-year tenure as Thematic Research Lead for Health at POST, where he focused on integrating clinical evidence into policy development.

In his new position, Professor Strain will provide clinical leadership and expert guidance to the DWP, ensuring that medical evidence informs policy decisions and service delivery. He has expressed a commitment to translating research into practical improvements, particularly for individuals with long-term health conditions. His appointment aims to strengthen the Department’s engagement with clinical professionals and enhance the role of medical expertise in its operations.

Professor Strain will succeed Dr Gail Allsopp, who has served as DWP Chief Medical Advisor since 2021. During her tenure, Dr Allsopp played a key role in advancing the Department’s clinical policy, governance, and safeguarding frameworks. Her leadership contributed to elevating the profile of clinical professionals within DWP and across government, leaving a lasting impact on the Department’s approach to health-related decision-making.

The DWP stated that Professor Strain’s appointment aligns with its ongoing efforts to integrate clinical expertise into its work. The Department highlighted the importance of evidence-based policy in supporting its services, particularly in areas such as disability benefits and health-related assessments. His role will involve advising on clinical standards and ensuring that medical considerations are central to DWP’s policies and procedures.
