The Zooniverse, a NASA-funded platform, has reached 1 billion classifications contributed by volunteers worldwide, marking a significant milestone in collaborative research. These classifications include identifying light curve dips, tracking celestial objects, and classifying wildlife images, each contributing to scientific understanding. The milestone reflects the collective effort of 324,000 volunteers across 31 NASA-sponsored projects since 2020, demonstrating the impact of public participation in scientific discovery.
Projects such as Planet Hunters TESS, Daily Minor Planet, and Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 have enabled volunteers to assist in discovering exoplanets, identifying near-Earth objects, and analyzing solar wind effects. These efforts have resulted in 96 scientific publications, with 56 featuring NASA citizen scientists as co-authors, highlighting their contributions to research.
Zooniverse’s collaboration with NASA has provided science-enabling infrastructure, supporting researchers through tools and a community of over 3 million registered volunteers. The platform, co-founded by the Adler Planetarium and the University of Oxford, with the University of Minnesota as a key partner, continues to expand its role in facilitating real scientific research through public engagement.
The milestone underscores the importance of combining human curiosity with advanced data analysis, particularly as NASA prepares for future missions like the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Laura Trouille, principal investigator of Zooniverse, emphasized that each classification represents a meaningful contribution to research, bringing humanity closer to new discoveries and deeper understanding.
