Nikon Adds 3D Vision Tracking to Its Robot Vision System
Nikon upgrades its robot vision system with 3D vision tracking, enabling robotic arms to detect workpiece inclination and orientation without additional hardware, supporting flexible automation in manufacturing.
Nikon Corporation is enhancing its robot vision system with a new 3D vision tracking feature, allowing robotic arms to measure and respond to workpieces moving on conveyors in three dimensions. The update detects not only position but also inclination, attitude, and orientation, enabling precise tracking without requiring encoders or other additional equipment. This broadens the system’s applicability across diverse production environments, supporting automation and reducing reliance on manual labor.
The 3D vision tracking feature uses 3D camera sensors to capture detailed measurements, enabling robots to adjust their movements dynamically to irregular workpiece orientations and vibrations. Unlike conventional 2D vision tracking, which only detects planar changes, the new system provides full three-dimensional awareness, improving accuracy in tasks such as picking and assembling workpieces under complex conditions.
Nikon’s robot vision system integrates a sensor and control PC to perform high-speed image processing, allowing instantaneous decision-making for robotic arm movements. The system eliminates the need for synchronization with conveyors or transport equipment, streamlining automation processes and supporting applications like bin picking and vision tracking in production lines.
The updated feature will be demonstrated at the Factory Innovation Week 2026 SMART FACTORY Expo in Aichi Sky Expo from November 25 to 27. Existing customers can access the 3D vision tracking feature through a paid software update, expanding the capabilities of Nikon’s robot vision system lineup.
