PayPal and Venmo Expand to Tuition Payments in New Integrations with Illumia, Nelnet Campus Commerce, and TouchNet
PayPal and Venmo now allow tuition payments at select U.S. universities through integrations with Illumia, Nelnet Campus Commerce, and TouchNet, expanding payment options for students and families.
PayPal and Venmo have integrated with three leading education payment platforms—Illumia, Nelnet Campus Commerce, and TouchNet—to enable direct tuition payments at participating universities. The service is currently available at institutions such as Bellarmine University, Butler University, Kansas State University, Michigan State University, and Texas Tech University, with additional schools expected to join. These platforms collectively serve thousands of colleges and universities across the country, providing students and families with a familiar and trusted payment method for one of their largest educational expenses.
The expansion follows prior agreements with the Big Ten and Big 12 Conferences, which included enabling institutional revenue-share payments for student athletes. Venmo has also grown its presence on campuses through partnerships with student athletes, branded cards, and campus activations. This initiative aims to bring the same convenience and security students already use for daily transactions to tuition payments, offering encryption, fraud monitoring, and multiple funding options including bank accounts, credit cards, and PayPal or Venmo balances.
Frank Keller, President of Checkout Solutions & PayPal, emphasized the importance of flexibility and security for tuition payments, stating that families should have the same trusted options they rely on for everyday purchases. The integration allows students and families to use their preferred payment methods within existing campus systems, reducing friction while maintaining operational efficiency for institutions.
Education payment providers Illumia, Nelnet Campus Commerce, and TouchNet highlighted the practical benefits of the integration. Jackie Strohbehn of Nelnet Campus Commerce noted that expanding payment options helps address affordability barriers, while Jeremy Loch of TouchNet emphasized improved convenience and operational efficiency for both students and campus teams.
