The lead developer of the PS5 Linux project has stepped away, citing frustration with the community and the loss of a critical hypervisor bug to Sony.
Andy Nguyen, the lead developer behind the open-source project that enabled Ubuntu Linux to run on PlayStation 5 consoles, announced his departure from the initiative. Nguyen stated he is stepping away from all work related to PS5 Linux, including plans to support the PS5 Pro and a planned 2027 release. The project relied on exploiting hypervisor bugs to bypass Sony’s security measures, allowing Linux to function on the console.
Nguyen expressed disappointment with the current state of the PS5 Linux community, describing it as dominated by inexperienced developers using AI tools to create unstable solutions they do not fully grasp. He criticized the group for reporting the last remaining hypervisor bug to Sony, which will likely lead to a patch that disables the project’s functionality.
The project’s viability was further undermined when the final hypervisor bug was discovered and reported to Sony by what Nguyen termed 'slop kiddies.' This bug was essential for the planned PS5 Pro support, meaning its loss effectively ends the project’s future development.
Nguyen recounted an attempt to delay the bug’s disclosure until after the release of *Grand Theft Auto VI* to allow players to legally purchase the game, but the group ignored his request and reported it immediately. The developer’s departure reflects both frustration with the community’s behavior and the project’s diminished prospects.
