How Mahindra Uses Planet Monitoring to Transform Sugarcane Harvest Planning in India
Mahindra and Mahindra is using Planet’s satellite imagery to shift India’s sugarcane harvests from calendar-based to maturity-based scheduling, aiming to improve sugar recovery and mill profitability amid declining recovery rates.

India’s sugarcane industry, producing over 450 million metric tons annually, has faced declining sugar recovery due to premature harvesting driven by competition and limited field visibility. Mahindra and Mahindra is addressing this by integrating Planet’s near-daily satellite imagery into mill operations, enabling data-driven decisions on when to harvest based on crop maturity rather than fixed schedules. The approach replaces manual field scouting and low-frequency public satellite data, which often fail to capture the growth dynamics of small, fragmented farms across India’s 5.9 million hectares of sugarcane fields.
The solution leverages PlanetScope® imagery to provide high-frequency, high-resolution data that mills can feed directly into their ERP systems and management dashboards. This integration allows for optimized harvesting schedules aligned with both crushing capacity and crop readiness, addressing the dynamic nature of sugar recovery influenced by irrigation, weather, and other factors. Weekly prediction cycles ensure decisions remain current, with Mahindra exploring further reductions to two-to-three-day intervals as higher-frequency data becomes available.
The transition to a maturity-based model has delivered measurable benefits to participating sugar mills, including improved sugar recovery rates and operational efficiency. By reducing premature harvesting, mills can enhance revenue while minimizing resource use, aligning profitability with sustainability goals. The approach demonstrates how high-frequency Earth observation data can modernize traditional agricultural processes, offering a replicable model for other sectors within agriculture.
The initiative is based on insights from Rucha Nanavati, Senior Vice President and Chief of Advanced Technologies at Mahindra’s Farm Equipment Business, who highlights the role of data-driven solutions in improving efficiency and sustainability in the sugar industry.
