Planet SuperRes Is Now Available; See the World More Clearly
Planet Labs has launched Planet SuperRes, an AI-enhanced technology that upgrades its daily satellite imagery from 3 meters to 2 meters resolution, improving visibility of small features like trees and rooftops for analysis.
The useful question is what changes for users, developers or buyers, and whether the announcement stays industry context or becomes something people can actually use.
Planet Labs today announced Planet SuperRes, a new AI-driven capability that enhances the spatial resolution of its PlanetScope imagery from 3 meters to 2 meters. This upgrade allows analysts to observe finer details such as individual trees and rooftop markings in near-daily satellite imagery, improving the accuracy of human-in-the-loop assessments. The technology is designed to maintain natural visual fidelity while increasing clarity, ensuring that the enhanced imagery remains reliable for decision-making. Planet SuperRes is now available as part of the company’s monitoring solutions, with pricing and access details provided through its sales team.
The new SuperRes technology leverages a proprietary model trained on over 120,000 paired satellite images from PlanetScope and SkySat constellations. It employs Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network (ESRGAN) and perceptual loss training to produce visually realistic results. A pixel-level confidence layer is included to indicate the trustworthiness of the enhanced pixels, helping users assess data reliability before analysis. The model is optimized to replicate human-perceived visual quality, balancing sharpness with natural appearance. This ensures that the imagery remains both detailed and interpretable for end users.
Planet SuperRes is positioned as a significant advancement in satellite imagery accessibility, enabling broader applications in environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster response. The technology allows for high-resolution imaging across large areas, including global coverage, while maintaining regular revisit intervals. Users can now analyze small-scale features in near-daily imagery, which was previously limited to less frequent, higher-resolution datasets. The upgrade is particularly beneficial for applications requiring frequent updates and detailed visual inspection.
To support adoption, Planet Labs is offering a webinar titled 'Agile EO: A Clearer Picture With SuperRes' to demonstrate the technology’s capabilities. Interested organizations can also contact the company’s sales team for product selection and pricing information. The company emphasizes that AI-enhanced data should be validated by human review before operational use, ensuring accuracy in critical applications. SuperRes is available now as part of Planet’s commercial offerings.
