The PlayStation team explains how player reactions to Jin Sakai’s inclusion in Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted inspired a deeper look at the development process behind bringing the character back. Developers describe the challenge of recreating Jin’s combat identity while adapting to the new roguelike, class-based structure of Most Wanted, which required extensive animation and systems adjustments.

Bringing Jin Sakai to life involved retargeting over 60 attack animations, including bespoke kill moves, to the new character rig used in Ghost of Yōtei. Animators also created custom strafe animations for each of Jin’s stances to support the game’s Focus Attack model, while balancing mechanics like Stone Stance’s Piercing Strike, which initially proved too powerful in testing.

The team focused on preserving Jin’s signature fighting style, blending formally trained techniques like Stone Stance with scrappier tactics such as Quickfire. New perks were designed to reinforce his classic feel, including Rattling Parry for increased Stagger damage and mechanics that encourage Perfect Parry, while maintaining his connection to the wind through additional abilities.

Artists updated Jin’s iconic armor, leveraging existing assets from Ghost of Tsushima but refining materials and adding subtle wear to match the higher fidelity of Ghost of Yōtei. The character’s idle animations, including his rarely seen “bird hold idle,” were also revived, with the selection animation inspired by his cinematic introduction in the original game.
