Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on September 4 exclusively for PlayStation 5, transporting players to early Edo-period Kyoto, a historic city under siege by monstrous Genma. The protagonist, Miyamoto Musashi, wields supernatural Oni powers in a narrative-driven action adventure. The game’s protagonist model is based on the iconic samurai actor Toshiro Mifune, blending historical inspiration with modern visual fidelity.
At Gamescom 2026, Capcom unveiled Trailer 6, showcasing intense swordplay against new enemies and Musashi’s Oni Awakening ability, which unleashes inner strength. The PlayStation Store demo has received a content update, expanding explorable areas and introducing a new boss, Daidara. Players who carry over demo save data unlock the Kubi Akari Charm in the full game and receive stat boosts for Musashi.
Director Satoru Nihei and producer Akihito Kadowaki discussed the game’s world-building, centered around Kyoto’s Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple and local folklore. The team rebuilt the universe to stand alone, avoiding direct ties to previous franchise entries. Genma emerge from hell through portals when Malice overflows, while Oni guard these gateways to prevent their intrusion into the human realm.
The development team faced challenges recreating Toshiro Mifune’s likeness without access to 3D facial scans, relying on reference materials and support from Mifune Productions. The game emphasizes visceral combat with systems like Dynamic Dismemberment and Break Issen, which simplifies timing for iconic attacks. PS5 features such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D audio enhance immersion, with audio recorded in real Kyoto temples to replicate authentic acoustics.
