Baldur's Gate 3 Just Got a New Region With 30+ Fights And 70+ Items
A new mod for Baldur’s Gate 3 adds the Chionthar Wilds, a sprawling wilderness region between the Shadow-Cursed Lands and Baldur’s Gate, featuring over 30 fights, 70 items, and new quests.
Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3 has long been criticized for its linear structure, offering little room for exploration compared to other acts. A new mod, Act Two Expansion by SquallyDaBeanz, addresses this by introducing the Chionthar Wilds, a vast new region bridging the gap between the Shadow-Cursed Lands and Baldur’s Gate. The mod transforms a previously uneventful stretch of the map into an open wilderness filled with new quests, dungeons, and encounters, expanding the game’s second act significantly.
The Chionthar Wilds is designed to resemble the scale of Act 1’s wilderness, a region known for consuming dozens of hours of gameplay. The mod includes over 30 combat encounters, more than 70 new items, custom creatures with unique stat blocks, and additional NPCs and cutscenes tailored for parties at levels eight to ten. The expansion draws inspiration from the Chionthar, a major trade river in the Forgotten Realms, where control over its mouth has historically been a source of conflict.
Players can access the Chionthar Wilds through a simple process: downloading the .pak file from Nexus Mods and enabling it via the in-game Mod Manager. Once installed, the mod alters the path between the Shadow-Cursed Lands and Baldur’s Gate, replacing the direct transition to Act 3 with an unfamiliar wilderness route. For those starting fresh, the mod offers a Quickstart option to begin a new game directly in the Wilds, complete with gear, experience points, and hirelings, or a spell scroll that unlocks a waypoint to the region from the game’s tutorial chest.
While the mod is still in beta and may contain rough edges, it provides an optional, insulated addition to Baldur’s Gate 3’s second act. The Chionthar Wilds emphasizes exploration over the polished storytelling of the main game, offering a more organic and less scripted experience. Players who enjoy deviating from the main path may find this expansion particularly rewarding, as it captures the spirit of stumbling into forgotten corners of Faerûn.
