D&D's Japanese Rival Sword World Crowdfunding Raises Over $2 million in a Day
Sword World RPG, Japan’s top fantasy TTRPG, launched its first English localization on BackerKit, raising over $2 million in a day through Mugen Gaming’s campaign.
Japan’s most popular tabletop role-playing game, Sword World RPG, has debuted its first official English localization via BackerKit, spearheaded by Mugen Gaming. The campaign surpassed $2 million in funding within 24 hours of its October 20 launch, demonstrating strong international interest. Mugen Gaming, specializing in localizing Japanese tabletop games, secured rights from Group SNE and Kadokawa, resolving prior licensing barriers. The project aims to deliver a complete localization, design, and printing of the Sword World 2.5 Core Rules, with products expected to ship by December 2027.
Sword World RPG originated in the late 1980s when Group SNE, inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, created their own system after TSR restricted their play reports. The game became a cultural phenomenon in Japan, overshadowing D&D and pioneering "actual play" content. Its success stemmed from affordability, accessibility, and a blend of Western fantasy with Japanese storytelling and artwork. Group SNE’s president, Hitoshi Yasuda, highlighted its multi-class system and narrative flexibility as key strengths that appeal to diverse players.
The crowdfunding campaign, running until November 20, offers tiered rewards including the Core Rulebook, Gamemasters Guide, Monster Manual, dice sets, character sheets, and battle mats. Higher pledges feature signed books and exclusive items, with all products slated for December 2027 delivery. Mugen Gaming has cultivated a dedicated community through the Sword World Discord server, which played a pivotal role in the campaign’s rapid funding success.
The localization effort is supported by Group SNE and art director Shunsuke Nakashige, known for directing anime series like Solo Leveling and Sword Art Online. Nakashige’s involvement ensures the game’s visual style aligns with its Japanese roots while appealing to global audiences. The campaign’s momentum reflects growing demand for localized Japanese TTRPGs, positioning Sword World RPG to expand beyond its domestic market.
