Dropout Announces New Scripted Series that Spoofs MTV
Dropout unveiled a scripted comedy series parodying MTV’s music video countdowns, premiering November 4 with new episodes every two weeks.
Dropout, known for its improv-focused content, announced a new live-action scripted series titled MP3 on Tuesday. The three-episode project diverges from the streamer’s usual format by featuring structured storytelling and scripted performances. The series stars Jeremy Culhane, Skye Townsend, Aparna Nancherla, and Paul F. Tompkins, who portray hosts of a music video countdown show with comedic conflicts and guest interviews. MP3 spoofs programs like MTV’s Total Request Live, blending satire with scripted narrative elements throughout each episode.
The cast includes Dropout regulars like Katie Marovitch, Lou Wilson, and Jacob Wysocki, who appear as artists in the music videos featured on the show. Jess McKenna and Zach Reino, who also serve as producers, contribute to the music compositions and appear in some videos. The trailer hints at a crossover with Dropout’s Very Important People universe, featuring Anna Garcia’s Princess Emily and leaving room for additional cameos from other network characters.
MP3 will premiere its first episode on Wednesday, November 4, with subsequent episodes released every two weeks. The schedule includes new installments on November 18 and December 2, maintaining Dropout’s staggered release pattern for scripted series. Each song performed in the episodes will be made available on music streaming platforms following their air dates, aligning with the show’s musical focus.
The series represents Dropout’s latest effort to diversify its content offerings, following a year of experimentation that included licensed programming and a new scripted animated show. CEO Sam Reich emphasized the platform’s intent to explore varied formats, stating Dropout aims to be ‘really all over the place in terms of what it’s trying.’
