Indian startup Macsen Energy claims its Prussian white-based sodium-ion battery cell has exceeded 1,500 charge-discharge cycles in laboratory testing, retaining 90% of its initial capacity after 1,000 cycles.

India-based Macsen Energy Private Limited has announced that a sodium-ion battery cell using its proprietary Prussian white cathode material exceeded 1,500 charge-discharge cycles in laboratory testing. The company did not disclose whether the results had been independently verified by a third party. Achal Agrawal, CEO of Macsen Group, highlighted the significance of the findings, stating that the cell retained 90% of its initial capacity after 1,000 cycles while maintaining high coulombic efficiency.

Prussian white, a sodium-rich, iron-based compound, serves as the cathode material in Macsen’s sodium-ion cells. The material’s open crystal structure allows reversible sodium-ion insertion and extraction, enabling fast charging and long cycle life. Macsen’s approach combines this cathode with a hard carbon anode, though the company is also exploring alternative anode configurations to optimize performance and scalability.

Macsen Energy claims its production process addresses key challenges such as moisture sensitivity and oxygen exposure, producing a highly crystalline, fully sodiated material with low water content and improved air stability. The company reports a specific capacity exceeding 150 mAh/g and attributes the material’s performance to its open crystal structure, which minimizes structural changes during cycling.

Macsen Energy has allocated 10,000 m2 of land for a facility to scale up Prussian blue analogue cathode material production to tonne-scale capacity, with construction planned to begin in 2027. The site will also house a sodium-ion battery pilot line for near-commercial manufacturing conditions, including electrode preparation, cell assembly, and performance testing.
