"My idea of a Netflix for games doesn’t work": Garry's Mod creator says struggling spiritual successor S&box will go free to play as part of major rethink
Facepunch Studios will make S&box free to play by year-end after poor reception, shifting focus from user-generated content to curated gameplay and standard character models.
Facepunch Studios, creators of Garry’s Mod and Rust, launched S&box earlier this year as a mix of an open-source game engine and a spiritual successor to their Valve sandbox. The platform struggled with mixed reviews and an influx of low-quality AI-generated games, prompting founder Garry Newman to announce a major overhaul. Newman admitted embarrassment over the game’s reception and acknowledged that the initial approach of mimicking a Roblox-style hub for user-created content had failed to resonate with players.
Newman outlined a shift in focus from the engine and development tools to improving the player experience, including enhancing the Sandbox Game with more NPCs, vehicles, and a first-class multiplayer experience. The studio plans to add support for addons and customization while abandoning its cartoony “citizen” character models in favor of standard human ones to reduce the Roblox-like aesthetic. The goal is to prioritize quality over quantity in game curation.
The most significant change is the decision to make S&box free to play by the end of the year, a move Newman stated was always planned but accelerated due to the need to attract more players. Existing players who purchased the game will receive exclusive Steam inventory items as compensation, with additional rewards for those who paid the higher price tier. The shift reflects a broader strategy to prioritize player acquisition and engagement over immediate revenue.
Newman conceded that his original vision of S&box as a “Netflix for games” was unworkable, as players prefer discovering games through recommendations, multiplayer, and content creators rather than browsing a large menu. The studio’s rethink aims to align the platform with how players actually engage with games, though it remains unclear whether these changes will restore S&box’s standing among players.
