RuneScape 4 is a new Unreal Engine MMO which reportedly grew out of a planned Dragonwilds expansion, though it's still a long way off
Jagex announced RuneScape 4, a new Unreal Engine MMO set in Gielinor’s Ashenfall region, evolving from a planned Dragonwilds expansion and still in early development.
Jagex unveiled RuneScape 4 at RuneFest, marking the fourth entry in the series and its first development using Unreal Engine. The studio described the project as early in development, aiming to blend the depth and community-driven design of past RuneScape titles with modern technology. The game will introduce a new setting within Gielinor, leveraging lessons learned from the survival spin-off Dragonwilds while expanding into a full MMO experience.
The new MMO originated as a planned 2027 expansion for Dragonwilds before evolving into a standalone mainline entry. Jagex confirmed it will be set in the Sixth Age of Gielinor, beginning in the Ashenfall region—a landmass northeast of the known world first explored in Dragonwilds. The story will unfold years after the events of Dragonwilds, following the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra and the transformation of Ashenfall over time.
Jagex emphasized that RuneScape 4 is not a replacement for existing RuneScape games but will exist alongside them as an additional way to experience Gielinor. The studio plans to integrate technical advancements from Dragonwilds and community co-development practices from RuneScape and Old School. The ambition is to expand beyond Ashenfall, introducing new areas and stories while revisiting familiar locations over time.
Alongside the announcement, Jagex revealed RuneScape Reignited, a new permanent character type debuting on December 2nd. This feature offers players a fresh perspective on the game’s world, though details remain limited. The studio framed both projects as part of its ongoing efforts to evolve the RuneScape experience while maintaining its core identity.
