New update allows following roaming stalkers for fast travel, but destinations are limited to their patrol routes.

The 2.1 update for STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl enhances the A-Life system, which governs unscripted NPC behavior, by increasing the distance at which these characters are rendered and heard. Unlike scripted characters, A-Life NPCs wander, engage in faction conflicts, and perform random activities. The update introduces new settings to expand the simulation bubble, aiming to create a more immersive sense of the Zone’s dynamic environment. Players can now adjust the range of A-Life NPC visibility and audio cues, though the highest settings may still impact performance.

Performance tests conducted on an RTX 4060 at 1080p with Quality-level DLSS and High preset settings showed minimal framerate drops. The average framerate remained at 93fps on the Recommended setting, unchanged on Extended, and only dropped to 91fps on Highly Extended, Maximum, and Dynamic settings. The modest 2fps reduction suggests the expanded A-Life range does not impose a significant performance tax, contrary to earlier warnings about instability or crashes.

The update also introduces a quirk where A-Life settings influence binocular mechanics, including faction marker range and binocular zoom levels. Selecting the Maximum A-Life setting appears to increase binocular magnification, as demonstrated in comparative screenshots. While this may be unintended, it offers an unexpected bonus for players seeking enhanced visibility during exploration.

Beyond A-Life adjustments, the 2.1 patch adds the ability to follow roaming stalkers for fast travel, though their routes limit destinations to areas they patrol. This feature aligns with the game’s emphasis on unscripted NPC behavior, where characters prioritize their own paths over player convenience. The update is available now for all players.
