New Research: CFOs Turn to AI and Agents to Tame Growing Revenue Complexity
A Salesforce survey of 865 finance leaders finds CFOs increasingly rely on AI and agents to manage revenue complexity and govern AI adoption, with 90% reporting positive ROI.
A Salesforce survey of 865 finance leaders across three continents reveals that CFOs now view AI as essential for managing financial workflows and monitoring its own company-wide deployment. Nearly three-quarters of respondents say their role’s scope expanded in the past year, with AI governance emerging as the primary driver of that change. Finance leaders are no longer just reporting on business performance but are now primary decision makers in their companies’ AI strategies, shifting accountability for risk, control, and financial outcomes. Sam Chung, Chief Customer Officer of Agentforce Revenue Management, notes that AI decisions now arrive at finance as questions about risk and accountability rather than budget requests.
The survey highlights a rapidly diversifying revenue landscape, with 71% of finance leaders reporting more sales channels than a year ago. Revenue models have also expanded, with 65% of teams now tracking deals across multiple models, including subscriptions, usage-based, and hybrid arrangements. This complexity creates fragmentation in revenue data, as transactions span multiple systems and require reconciliation before finance gains a complete picture. Consumption-based products, now planned by 87% of companies, further complicate tracking, as revenue recognition depends on real-time usage data rather than straightforward one-time sales.
Finance teams are struggling with manual workflows, with 67% completing at least one in five processes manually, often using spreadsheets. This manual work consumes significant time and introduces risk, prompting leaders to seek automation opportunities. Among finance teams using AI, 90% report positive ROI, while those using AI agents specifically cite benefits in time savings, productivity, cost savings, and forecast accuracy. Agentic AI has reduced invoice processing time by up to 80%, demonstrating tangible efficiency gains in high-volume tasks.
Despite the benefits, barriers to AI expansion persist, with 46% of finance leaders citing security as a top concern. Governance and integration with existing systems are also major obstacles, each cited by 42% of respondents. Additionally, 46% point to limited internal expertise as a challenge, underscoring the dual demands placed on finance teams to both govern AI and leverage it for managing complexity. The survey, conducted May 4–15, 2026, included responses from CFOs and senior finance executives across five countries.
