Samsung SDI signs 1 GWh supply agreement for US-made NCA battery storage
Samsung SDI will supply 1 GWh of US-made NCA battery storage to Alpha Omega Power for projects in key US energy markets, with deliveries starting in 2026.
Samsung SDI has finalized a supply agreement to deliver 1 GWh of nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) battery storage to Alpha Omega Power (APO), a utility and independent power producer. All cells and modules will be manufactured at Samsung SDI’s StarPlus Energy plant in Kokomo, Indiana, ensuring US-based production. The contract covers Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.7 containerized energy storage systems, with deliveries expected before the end of 2026.
The battery storage systems will be deployed in projects within the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) and Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) energy markets. These markets cover significant portions of the western and central United States, including California and Texas. Construction on the projects is scheduled to begin in 2027, aligning with the delivery timeline.
Samsung SDI’s SBB 1.7 offers a 17% higher energy density than its predecessor, the SBB 1.5, while maintaining the same 20-foot container footprint. The system incorporates Enhanced Direct Injection technology, which injects fire-extinguishing agents directly into individual battery modules to enhance safety. This marks a strategic investment by APO in NCA chemistry amid a market where lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells dominate.
This agreement adds to a prior supply contract signed in 2025, bringing Samsung SDI’s total contracted supply to APO to 1.5 GWh. The deal underscores Samsung SDI’s focus on differentiated technology and US production capabilities in the North American energy storage market. APO’s CEO highlighted the importance of American-made energy storage systems in supporting domestic energy infrastructure growth.
