SKT, AI DC 인프라 컴퍼니 ‘SK호라이즌’ 출범

SK Telecom will spin off its subsidiary SK브로드밴드 into two entities: the existing company focusing on wired, media, and enterprise businesses, and a new firm, SK호라이즌, dedicated to AI data center (DC) infrastructure. The split follows a ₩3.08 trillion investment by global investor KKR and IMM Investments-Stonebridge Capital Consortium, securing funding for AI DC expansion and undersea cable projects. The new governance structure is designed to enhance operational expertise and decision-making speed for AI infrastructure initiatives.

SK호라이즌 will oversee the operation and expansion of AI DCs, including eight existing facilities and new projects in Ulsan and Guro, targeting a total capacity of 318 MW. The company will also lead the phased construction of undersea cables critical for global AI services. SK Telecom will retain majority control at 51%, while KKR and IMM will hold 29% and 20% stakes, respectively, ensuring strategic alignment and capital infusion for growth.

The restructuring formalizes SK Telecom’s AI DC strategy, with SK호라이즌 managing infrastructure expansion and SK하이퍼, established in July, focusing on developing new 5GW and 15GW DC projects by 2029 and 2035. SK Telecom will oversee overall AI DC business direction and collaborate with global tech firms, while SK브로드밴드 will innovate its AX-based services to bolster competitiveness in wired, media, and enterprise sectors.

Stakeholders highlighted the move’s significance for Korea’s digital sovereignty and AI capacity. KKR emphasized SK호라이즌’s strong operational platform and strategic partnerships, while IMM Investments underscored the role of AI DCs and undersea cables in securing national competitiveness. SK브로드밴드 CEO Kim Sung-soo framed the restructuring as a proactive measure to enhance AI DC expertise and execution speed, positioning SK호라이즌 as a leading domestic DC operator.
