The split follows a ₩3.08 trillion investment by global investor KKR and IMM Investments-Stonebridge Capital Consortium, securing funding for AI DC expansion and undersea cable projects. The new governance structure is designed to enhance operational expertise and decision-making speed for AI infrastructure initiatives.

The restructuring formalizes SK Telecom’s AI DC strategy, with SK호라이즌 managing infrastructure expansion and SK하이퍼, established in July, focusing on developing new 5GW and 15GW DC projects by 2029 and 2035. SK Telecom will oversee overall AI DC business direction and collaborate with global tech firms, while SK브로드밴드 will innovate its AX-based services to bolster competitiveness in wired, media, and enterprise sectors.

Stakeholders highlighted the move’s significance for Korea’s digital sovereignty and AI capacity. KKR emphasized SK호라이즌’s strong operational platform and strategic partnerships, while IMM Investments underscored the role of AI DCs and undersea cables in securing national competitiveness.
