SKT, ‘아시아 AI 인프라 허브’ 본격 시동 AI DC 사업개발 전문회사 신설

SK Telecom’s board approved the establishment of SK하이퍼(Hyper), a dedicated AI data center development company, during a meeting on the 23rd. The new entity will receive up to 750 billion won in capital contributions from SK Telecom by 2030 to fund infrastructure projects. SK하이퍼 will focus on securing land, constructing substations, and commercializing AI data centers as part of a broader push to expand capacity. The company will operate as a 100% subsidiary of SK Telecom, with funds disbursed in stages based on project needs.

SK Telecom outlined a phased expansion plan for AI data centers, targeting 5GW of capacity by 2029 as the first stage. The company plans to scale up to 15GW by 2035, contingent on market demand and other factors. The initiative aligns with government megaprojects aimed at strengthening AI infrastructure in South Korea. SK Telecom also formed an AI data center integration task force under the CEO to coordinate efforts across the group.

The new subsidiary will prioritize regional AI infrastructure development, beginning with a GW-scale cluster in Ulsan. Additional facilities are planned for Chungcheong and southwestern regions to ensure nationwide coverage. The company’s leadership includes CEO Jeong Seok-geun, who previously led SK Telecom’s AI data center initiatives and will oversee the integration task force. Jeong emphasized SK하이퍼’s role in realizing SK Group’s vision of becoming an ‘Asia AI infrastructure hub.’

Jeong Seok-geun, inaugural CEO of SK하이퍼, stated the company will contribute to South Korea’s ambition of becoming one of the world’s top three AI nations. He highlighted the need for systematic execution to secure critical infrastructure and attract customers. The establishment of SK하이퍼 follows SK Telecom’s broader strategy to consolidate its AI capabilities under a unified organizational structure.
