Key points
·
True artist-fan connection can only be built on a foundation of trust and authenticity.
·
In music, that means listeners need to be able to trust that the artist behind the music is who they say they are.
·
That’s more essential than ever in the age of generative AI.
·
So this year, we’ve made Artist Identity & Trust one of its very top priorities with the launch of Verified by Spotify, SongDNA, AI Credits, and Artist Profile Protection.

Spotify announced it will begin displaying an AI Persona badge on artist profiles that may represent AI-generated identities, addressing listener concerns about authenticity. The badge will appear in artist profiles, search results, and playlists, signaling to users that the persona is not a real person. This initiative is part of Spotify’s broader Artist Identity & Trust program, which includes features like Verified by Spotify and AI Credits to enhance transparency in music creation and artist representation. The company emphasizes that the badge pertains to the artist’s public identity, not the creative process behind the music itself.

Listeners will not see AI Persona profiles in default editorial or algorithmic recommendations unless they follow such profiles. Spotify will apply badges either through self-disclosure by artists or through internal review of profiles that appear to use photorealistic AI-generated identities. Artists with defined audience thresholds will be prioritized for badge application, covering the majority of profiles users encounter. The badge will include details on whether the artist self-disclosed or if Spotify made the determination, with an option for artists to appeal if the badge was applied by the platform.

Artists can now indicate through Spotify for Artists whether their profile represents an AI Persona, though the company will not rely solely on self-disclosure. Spotify’s review team will also proactively identify profiles that appear to use AI-generated identities, notifying affected artists and offering them the chance to self-disclose or appeal. In the coming months, listeners will gain the ability to report profiles they suspect represent AI Personas, with further details to be shared later. The initiative aims to clarify the distinction between human artists and AI-generated personas while maintaining transparency in artist representation.

The AI Persona badge is part of Spotify’s ongoing efforts to foster trust and authenticity in its platform, complementing existing tools like AI Credits and SongDNA. These tools provide listeners with information about how AI was used in music creation. Spotify’s algorithms are designed to prioritize authentic human artists and exclude low-effort or spam content from recommendations. The company acknowledges the evolving nature of the music ecosystem and pledges to adapt its approach based on feedback from artists, listeners, and industry partners.
