DATA Network joins Sui and Walrus to scale the supply chain for AI training data
The DATA Network and its Trace registry will integrate with Sui and Walrus to provide a rights-cleared supply of AI training data, enhancing provenance and storage for AI labs.
The DATA Network and its Trace registry are joining the Sui blockchain ecosystem, bringing a live supply of over 250 million rights-cleared AI training data contributions to Sui’s infrastructure designed for AI workloads. Walrus, Sui’s data storage platform with integrity proofs, will serve as the default storage layer for DATA Foundation applications, ensuring secure and verifiable data handling. The DATA Network will upgrade to operate natively on Sui, enabling AI labs to source traceable, consented data with provenance recorded by Trace and original files stored on Walrus.
Trace, launched by DATA Foundation in June 2026, records the origin and rights of each data contribution while settling payments to contributors, processing over 3 million receipts daily. Applications like Kled, Numo, and Oto already license data from Trace to frontier AI labs and robotics companies, demonstrating existing demand for rights-cleared datasets. The upgrade aims to strengthen provenance guarantees by storing encrypted, immutable copies of contributed files on Walrus, allowing independent verification of data integrity.
Sui’s architecture treats datasets and licenses as programmable objects, enabling onchain management with transactions settling in under a second, supporting millions of daily registrations. Walrus complements this by providing efficient storage for large AI datasets with built-in access control, ensuring only licensed buyers can read the data while maintaining tamper evidence. The integration positions Sui as a comprehensive stack for AI data provenance, combining verifiable storage, access control, and ownership tracking.
The collaboration is backed by a $30 million strategic investment from Sui Foundation, the largest institutional stake in the DATA Network, alongside holdings from PIP Labs and DATA Foundation. SY Lee, Chairman of Poseidon and CEO of PIP Labs, joins Sui Foundation as Strategic Advisor, further aligning the organizations. Andrea Muttoni, CEO of DATA Foundation, emphasized the importance of traceable, auditable data for AI safety and quality, highlighting Trace’s role in tracking hundreds of millions of data assets.
