Funding accelerated to turbocharge prison building across country
The UK government is accelerating the largest prison-building programme since the Victorian era with a £110m investment to create additional capacity, including converting existing spaces and purchasing new land for future sites.
The £110m funding will expedite the construction of hundreds of new prison places as part of a broader plan to add 14,000 spaces by 2031, aimed at detaining dangerous criminals and enhancing public safety. Existing prison areas such as offices, laundry rooms, and storage spaces will be repurposed to increase capacity while new land acquisitions will secure potential future prison sites. The investment follows the signing of a contract for a new 1,700-place prison in Lancashire, marking the latest phase in efforts to prevent future shortages of prison spaces. The government states this initiative builds on over 3,200 prison places delivered in the past two years, with further measures to accelerate construction and reform sentencing policies.
The Lord Chancellor will outline changes to sentencing reforms in Parliament, including measures to prevent the early release of hundreds of dangerous offenders and expedite the removal of foreign national offenders. Additionally, plans to end Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentences will be introduced, balancing fairness with public safety concerns. These reforms aim to address longstanding issues within the prison system inherited by the current government.
An extra £18.9m will be allocated to support victims, providing specialist emotional and practical assistance to help them recover. This funding is drawn from existing budgets and supplements a previously announced £550m investment over three years dedicated to victim support services. The government highlights that spending on new prison construction has more than tripled compared to the previous seven years.
The accelerated funding and construction efforts are part of a broader strategy to reform the prison system and enhance public protection. The government emphasises the importance of delivering additional prison places swiftly while addressing systemic challenges, including sentencing reforms and victim support initiatives.
