Introducing the AI Biosecurity Lab
The UK government announced the AI Biosecurity Lab, backed by £300mn funding, to use AI for detecting biological threats and accelerating medical countermeasures, aiming to strengthen national and global biosecurity resilience.
The UK government will establish the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL) as the world’s first dedicated organisation focused on AI-driven biosecurity, backed by £100 million in public funding and up to £200 million in commitments from companies including OpenAI and Anthropic. The lab aims to develop technical capabilities to help the UK better understand, prevent, detect and respond to biological threats, aligning with the government’s broader Biological Security Strategy. AIBL will collaborate with national biosecurity centres and the life sciences industry to accelerate the discovery and testing of vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures, enabling faster responses to disease outbreaks.
AIBL will operate as an independent, non-profit organisation designed to attract leading technical talent from industry and academia, with sufficient autonomy to operate at the speed of a frontier AI–bio company. It will be supported by a scientific advisory committee drawing on expertise from academia, industry and the third sector, while maintaining strong partnerships with government agencies such as the UK Health Security Agency and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.
The lab will work with public-sector organisations, academic institutions, industry partners and frontier AI companies in the UK and internationally to translate advances in AI into practical capabilities that strengthen resilience to biological threats. AIBL will also partner with Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research on research collaborations and AI for science tools, further integrating cutting-edge AI research with biosecurity applications.
AIBL is part of the National AI Biosecurity Initiative, which brings together UKHSA, APHA, Dstl and the Life Sciences sector to enhance preparedness for health emergencies. The lab will also collaborate with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency to inform the regulation of AI-designed medicines and support emergency response efforts.
