Lebanon: UN peacekeepers count hundreds of Israeli strikes and incursions in a single weekend
UNIFIL reported 455 Israeli strikes and 97 airspace breaches into Lebanon over a weekend, marking one of the heaviest recent escalations in cross-border violence.
The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) documented 455 Israeli projectiles fired into south Lebanon and 97 airspace violations between Friday and Sunday, with Saturday alone accounting for 229 strikes—the highest single-day total since 21 June. Most violations involved drones, though helicopters and fighter jets were also recorded. Two Israeli boats briefly entered Lebanese waters before retreating, while tank fire and small-arms rounds landed near a UN position, underscoring the intensity of the weekend’s clashes.
UNIFIL also reported discovering unguarded weapons, unexploded ordnances (UXOs), and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in its operational sectors. A combined UNIFIL-Lebanese army patrol found a loaded 107mm rocket launcher with additional rockets in Sector East, while peacekeepers neutralized two UXOs and destroyed two IEDs in other sectors. These incidents highlight ongoing security risks in the area despite the presence of peacekeepers.
The reported activities violate Security Council resolution 1701, which established the framework for peace and stability in south Lebanon following the 2006 conflict. UNIFIL has observed near-daily Israeli military activities in Lebanese airspace and on the ground throughout the summer, contributing to a sharp escalation in violence compared to previous weeks.
UNIFIL Deputy Head of Mission Hervé Lecoq reaffirmed that resolution 1701 remains the foundation for future peace efforts, despite recent setbacks. The resolution’s core objectives and the need for a political path to lasting peace remain relevant. Additionally, UNIFIL facilitated three humanitarian missions in coordination with OCHA to support affected communities in both operational sectors.
